When we started Our Crafty Things, we noticed that there was a massive difference between home-based craft businesses that were making money and sales and those that were struggling. It wasn’t necessarily the quality of their crafts/products but their approach to running their business.
If you’ve started a new craft or home-based business you’re definitely in good company. According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), there was a record 5.7 million private sector businesses at the start of 2017. This is an increase of 197,000 since 2016 and 2.2 million more than in 2000. Small businesses accounted for 99.3% of all private sector businesses at the start of 2017, and 99.9% were small or medium-sized (SMEs).
However, there’s a big difference between business success and failure – according to a report by Ormsby Street, four out of ten new businesses don’t survive after five years! This is quite an alarming statistic and to be assured of success you need to understand the reasons why businesses fail! Commonly, it’s down to cash-flow, lack of sales, product challenges, high competition and not having a plan!
There is a lot of good, free or cost-effective information out there and we would always recommend taking tips and advice from those who have already been there and done it successfully! Having been there, we all recognise that when starting a business, there will be times when you are way out of your comfort zone and expertise.
